Md. Rashed Khan, General Secretary of the People’s Rights Council, has joined the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and will contest the upcoming parliamentary election from the Jhenaidah-4 constituency under the party’s electoral symbol, the sheaf of rice.

Rashed Khan formally joined the BNP on Saturday afternoon (December 27) by presenting bouquets to BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed at the party chairperson’s political office in Gulshan, Dhaka.

Confirming the development, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the BNP has decided that Rashed Khan will contest the election from Jhenaidah-4, which includes four unions of Kaliganj upazila and Jhenaidah Sadar.

“This is the party’s decision,” Fakhrul said. “I urge all BNP leaders and activists in the Jhenaidah-4 constituency to work wholeheartedly with Rashed Khan and ensure his victory.”

Earlier, Rashed Khan submitted his resignation to People’s Rights Council President Nurul Haque Nur, stepping down from his position as general secretary of the party. Party insiders said the move was taken as part of a political strategy ahead of the national parliamentary elections.

In his resignation letter to Nurul Haque Nur, Rashed Khan wrote that he had been involved in political movements alongside his colleagues since the quota reform movement of 2018. He expressed regret if any of his words or actions had caused hurt to fellow activists and thanked the party leadership for accepting his resignation.

“Wherever I remain, our relationship will stay sweet and unbreakable in the bond of brotherhood,” the letter said, adding that he was stepping down due to personal reasons while extending prayers and best wishes to the party and its leaders.
