Sylhet International University celebrates excellence in legal academia

The Department of Law at Sylhet International University recently hosted a vibrant and intellectually uplifting Prize Giving Ceremony celebrating the Legal Quiz Competition, Asian Parliamentary Debate Competition, and Academic Achievement Awards. The event reflected the department’s continued commitment to fostering academic excellence, critical thinking, and co-curricular engagement among law students, a press release said.

The ceremony was graced by the presence of distinguished guests and faculty members, adding prestige and inspiration to the occasion. The program was enriched by the Chief Guest, Prof. Dr. Ashraful Alam, Vice Chancellor of Sylhet International University. Among the special guests were Prof. Nitai Chandra Chanda, Treasurer, SIU; Prof. Md. Tutiur Rahman, Dean, Faculty of Law; Prof. Md. Shamsul Alam, Dean, Faculty of Business Administration; and Prof. Md. Shafiul Alam, Dean, Faculty of Humanities. The presence of respected faculty members from across disciplines added depth and warmth to the ceremony.

The program was presided over by A. K. M. Sohel Habib Nowroz, Head and Assistant Professor of the Department of Law, while the event was gracefully anchored by Maisha Nawar, Lecturer of the department.

The ceremony commenced with a cordial welcome extended to two newly appointed faculty members: Md. Shawkat Alam Faisal and Maisha Nawar; marking an important moment of institutional growth and renewal. The warm reception reflected the department’s collegial spirit and commitment to academic continuity.

Following the welcome session, tokens of appreciation were presented to respected faculty members of the Department of Law who served as adjudicators in the competitions. Their contribution was acknowledged as instrumental in maintaining academic rigor, fairness, and intellectual depth throughout the events.

The prize distribution segment began with the Legal Quiz Competition, which witnessed enthusiastic participation from more than 40 students. The competition showcased the participants’ legal awareness, analytical reasoning, and quick thinking. The top three performers were awarded certificates, medals, books, and commemorative gifts in recognition of their outstanding achievements.

Next, the Academic Achievement Awards were presented to meritorious students across all semesters. Two students from each semester were selected based on a comprehensive evaluation of academic results, class attendance, and overall classroom performance. This segment of the ceremony underscored the department’s holistic approach to legal education, recognizing both excellence and consistency.

The ceremony reached its climax with the announcement of the results of the Asian Parliamentary Debate Competition. The Champion and Runner-up teams were honored with trophies and medals, while the Debater of the Tournament received special recognition for exceptional oratory and argumentative skills. The debate competition, marked by intellectual vibrancy and competitive spirit, highlighted the department’s dedication to nurturing advocacy skills essential for future legal professionals.

The Prize Giving Ceremony stood as a celebration not only of achievement but also of academic community and aspiration.
