Entrepreneurs ensure salaries and allowances of garment workers: BGMEA President

Even amidst the pressures of global recession, geopolitical instability, increased competition in the international market, etc., garment industry entrepreneurs have completed the payment of salaries and allowances and Eid bonuses to workers on their own responsibility. BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan said this at a press briefing organized at the BGMEA Complex today, Wednesday, a press release said.

The BGMEA President mentioned in his speech that even amidst the multifaceted crisis at the international and local levels, BGMEA members have made every effort to pay their salaries, allowances, and festival bonuses out of their responsibility to their working brothers and sisters, as a result of which the working brothers and sisters have received their legal dues and it has been possible to maintain peace and stability in the industrial area.

He thanked the government and said that the current industry-friendly and labor-friendly government has provided special loans on easy terms to the workers for the payment of February salaries and released cash assistance of Tk 2,500 crore as soon as possible – these steps will ease the acute liquidity crisis of the garment sector entrepreneurs and have played a very effective and important role in keeping the wheels of the industry moving.

The press briefing said that 99.91% of the factories listed by BGMEA have completed the payment of February salaries and 99.81% of the factories have completed the payment of Eid bonuses. The payment of the remaining few factories is currently in the process, which will be completed by today.  Besides, despite no legal obligation, about 64.03% of factories have paid the partial salary of March to the workers as an advance on humanitarian grounds. To reduce the pressure of commuters on the highway, holidays are being given in a phased manner on an area-by-area basis. Till March 17, 50% of factories have been given holidays and the remaining factories will give holidays between today and tomorrow.
