NSU holds discussion on Independence and National Day 2026

North South University (NSU) hosts a discussion session today (Thursday) at its auditorium to mark Independence and National Day 2026, a press release said.

Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed, Political Adviser to the Hon’ble Prime Minister and Adviser to the Ministry of Industries, graced the event as the chief guest. The keynote speaker and guest of honour was freedom fighter Md. Fazlur Rahman, Member of Parliament for Kishoreganj-4. Freedom fighter Benazir Ahmed, Member of the Board of Trustees of NSU, attended as a special guest. NSU Vice-Chancellor Professor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury chaired the program. Among others present were NSU Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Nasar U. Ahmed, NSU Treasurer Professor Abdur Rob Khan, deans of different schools, faculty members, students, officials, and staff.

The discussion began with a recitation from the Holy Quran, followed by a one-minute silence in memory of the martyrs, and concluded with the national anthem.

In his welcome address, Professor Nasar U. Ahmed said, “On this day, I remember our valiant freedom fighters, whose sacrifices made our independence possible. Because of their sacrifices, we can speak freely today and stand tall in the world with our own identity.”

Keynote speaker, freedom fighter, Advocate, Md. Fazlur Rahman said, “Our independence was achieved through immense sacrifice and bloodshed. This history is not only to be remembered; it is part of the moral responsibility and national identity of the younger generation. At the same time, to move forward in global competition, we must develop ourselves into a scientific and modern nation.”

Chief guest Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed said, “We must know and acknowledge everyone’s contribution to the history of independence. To ensure true freedom, establishing good governance is essential. For this, the judiciary must be allowed to function independently, and merit-based, neutral personnel must be appointed in the administration.”

Special guest Benazir Ahmed said, “North South University remains committed to creating an environment where students can uphold and practice national history, culture, and the ideals of the Liberation War. To preserve the spirit of independence, we must move forward in every field, including art, literature, and politics.”

Vice-Chancellor Professor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury said, “We must never forget the contribution of those whose sacrifice and blood gave us this independent country. It is our responsibility to know their history and remember with honour those who rose above personal interest for the sake of the nation.”

The program concluded with the presentation of commemorative crests to the guests, followed by a photo session and a cultural performance by North South University Shangskritik Shangathan and NSU Cine and Drama Club.
