Visa, Asia Foundation sign deal to advance digital economies in South Asia

Visa (NYSE: V), a global leader in digital payments and The Asia Foundation have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore collaboration on advancing digital financial inclusion, economic empowerment, and inclusive digital innovation across Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan, a press release said.

Under the MoU, the two organizations will engage in discussions on potential areas of cooperation aimed at strengthening digital capabilities among underserved communities, small businesses, and young people, while supporting inclusive and sustainable economic growth in the region.

The proposed areas of collaboration include digital financial literacy, women’s economic empowerment, MSME digitization, youth skills development, and research and policy advocacy to strengthen inclusive digital economies. The MoU also seeks to explore opportunities around safe and responsible digital use, including cybersecurity and AI awareness, as well as innovation for inclusive fintech solutions and green and sustainable finance.

Sabbir Ahmed, Country Manager – Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan, Visa, said, “Through this collaboration, Visa and The Asia Foundation aim to jointly explore programs that can help women entrepreneurs, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), rural communities, and youth build essential financial and digital skills, adopt secure digital payment solutions, and better participate in the digital economy.”

The MoU reflects a shared commitment by both organizations to contribute to long-term social and economic development across South Asia by leveraging complementary expertise, Visa’s experience in digital payments and financial innovation, and The Asia Foundation’s deep regional presence and development knowledge.

Highlighting the importance of this collaboration, Kazi Faisal Bin Seraj, Country Representative of The Asia Foundation, added, “This partnership reflects a shared commitment to expanding economic opportunity in meaningful and practical ways. By working with Visa, we see an opportunity to strengthen digital and financial skills, support women entrepreneurs, micro, small and medium enterprises, and equip youth and underserved communities to participate more fully and confidently in the digital economy. Our focus is on approaches that are locally grounded, inclusive, and able to deliver lasting value for the communities we serve.”

This Memorandum of Understanding is non-binding and establishes a framework for dialogue and collaboration, with any future initiatives subject to further agreement by the parties.
