ABCCI holds trade talks to strengthen Australia-Bangladesh economic corridor post-LDC graduation

The Australia Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ABCCI) hosted a high-level Networking Reception and Strategic Trade Dialogue at the Radisson Blu Water Garden, Dhaka, on 29th April. The forum served as a critical platform for bilateral policy discourse, addressing the roadmap for economic cooperation as Bangladesh approaches its transition from Least Developed Country (LDC) status.

The event featured a distinguished assembly of the diplomatic corps, senior government officials, and the newly elected ABCCI Board of Directors. While the Australian High Commissioner conveyed her regrets due to high-level commitments, the Australian High Commission was represented by Josh Gacuten, a senior official from the trade and commerce wing, signaling continued institutional support for the bilateral partnership.

In his inaugural address, M. Maksud, the newly elected President of ABCCI, outlined   A vision for proactive Chamber, he outlined a revitalized mandate for the Chamber and emphasized a shift toward a more “member-centric and proactive” institutional framework. The President added “Our objective is to move beyond traditional trade silos,”. The ABCCI is committed to exploring untapped sectors and ensuring a consistent calendar of B2B matchmaking and policy advocacy to facilitate seamless market entry for both Australian and Bangladeshi

Delivering the keynote address, Ambassador Shahed Akhtar emphasized Geopolitical Synergies and Tariff Security. He stressed upon the bilateral relationship within the contemporary Indo-Pacific geopolitical landscape. He underscored the strategic necessity of diversified supply chains, noting potential global maritime disruptions, such as those in the Strait of Hormuz, as a catalyst for deeper regional cooperation.

Key strategic takeaways included:

Post-LDC Tariff Stability: In a significant development for exporters, Ambassador Akhtar reaffirmed the Australian government’s commitment to maintaining preferential tariff benefits for Bangladesh beyond its late-2026 LDC graduation.

Sectoral Diversification: He urged a pivot toward Australia’s mineral and technology sectors, inviting Australian firms to capitalize on Bangladesh’s expanding infrastructure and digital ecosystems.

Industry Excellence and Multilateral Insights: The dialogue featured technical presentations from industry leaders, including New Zealand Dairy Products Bangladesh Ltd, Square Fashions Ltd, and Weber Power Solutions Ltd. These showcases highlighted the sophisticated scale and technical prowess of Bangladeshi enterprises, earning high commendation from international observers.

Adding a multilateral perspective, Nuria Lopez, President of Eurocham Bangladesh, shared insights on the EU-Bangladesh strategic business dialogue and the transition toward the GSP+ framework, providing a comparative roadmap for trade sustainability.

The “High-Road” Economic Shift: The consensus among stakeholders pointed toward a “high-road” economic transition. With duty-free and quota-free access to Australia secured post-2026, the ABCCI will focus on: 1. Technology & Knowledge Transfer: Leveraging Australian expertise in sustainable mining and agritech. 2. Human Capital Investment: Establishing collaborative technical education programs. 3. Energy Security: Exploring bilateral partnerships in LNG and renewable energy to stabilize industrial supply chains.

In conclusion the event reaffirmed that while the Ready-Made Garment (RMG) sector remains the bedrock of exports, the future of the Australia-Bangladesh partnership will be defined by strategic maritime cooperation, mineral security, and high-tech integration.
