“I want to spread Bangla music worldwide”: Singer Jemi

DCV DESK: “Music runs in my blood. I’ve been deeply passionate about it since childhood. As long as I live, I want to stay with music and spread Bangla songs across the world,” said emerging singer Johra Hossain Jemi.

Jemi, a talented and popular voice of the current generation, has been making her mark since a young age by participating in various music competitions, where she consistently impressed with her vocal abilities.

She is now busy with stage performances, live television programs, and working on her original songs. Born and raised in Bhandaria upazila of Pirojpur district, Jemi was introduced to music at just four years old by her father. Later, she trained in classical music under Ustad Hiren Das and began learning Nazrul Sangeet from Sujit Mustafa in 2014.

Jemi gained recognition as one of the top 14 contestants in Sera Kontho 2014, organized by Channel i. Earlier, she also earned accolades in competitions like Shapla Kuri and Notun Kuri.

In 2025, she officially began her journey in original music with the song “Bondhu Kala Chan,” written by Azmal Palash and composed by Hridoy Hasin. Since then, she has released several original tracks, including “Tumi Swarthopor,” “Shoytani Beimani,” and “Bangla Amar Mayer Bhasha.”

Jemi is also a listed artist of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy and Bangladesh Betar, where she regularly performs. She participated in the Bengal Classical Music Festival in 2017 and is skilled in classical, modern, folk, and Nazrul music.

Academically, she completed her undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in folk music from the Government Music College. In recognition of her contributions to music, she received the ‘71 Media Iconic Award 2025’.

Currently, she has three unreleased original songs in the pipeline, which she plans to release soon as music videos. Reflecting on her journey, Jemi said, “Since childhood, I’ve dreamed of becoming a true artist, and I’ve been pursuing music with dedication ever since.”

She added, “I’ve come this far with the love and support of my parents, teachers, and family. I want to keep moving forward with everyone’s blessings.”
