DHAKA : North South University’s (NSU) Department of History and Philosophy organizes a special lecture titled “The July Charter: Understanding the Political Reforms from a Comparative Perspective” yesterday at the NSU Syndicate Hall, reports BSS.
Dr. Sumit Bisarya, Head of Mission and Constitution Building Program International IDEA, The Hague, Netherlands, was the Keynote Speaker. Professor Abdur Rob Khan, Treasurer & Pro-Vice Chancellor (IC), NSU, was the event’s Special Guest. Dr. Mahbubur Rahman, Professor & Chair, Department of History & Philosophy, NSU, was the Moderator. Dr. Md. Rizwanul Islam, Professor of Law & Dean, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, NSU, was also present at the event.
Dr. Sumit Bisarya delivered a presentation where he discussed how constitutions evolve globally, highlighted Bangladesh’s students as drivers of political change, and analyzed the July Charter from a comparative perspective. He said, “The July charter is a remarkable achievement, looking at the number of parties that signed it. But there is a lot to be done in terms of implementation”.
Professor Abdur Rob Khan delivered the closing remarks, saying, “I would like to thank the Department of History and Philosophy for arranging this event and all the participants for their lively engagement. This session took place at the right time, and our speaker delivered a very timely lecture”.
Dr. Md. Rizwanul Islam said, “The success of a constitution depends on very stable politics and social factors.It is not just a legal document, but much more than that. Hopefully the constitution will uphold the values of what we cherish and will bring real tangible progress to our country”.
Dr. Mahbubur Rahman stated, “The July Charter is a positive development in Bangladesh, but its effectiveness will depend on how things are implemented in the future”.
