NSU marks National Library Day with seminar on knowledge, freedom

North South University (NSU) observed National Library Day 2026 through a three-day series of academic and engagement activities from 5 to 9 February 2026, in line with the national observance declared by the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. The programs were organized under the theme “Knowledge brings freedom and builds the future (জ্ঞানেই মুক্তি, আগামীর ভিত্তি)”, a press release said.

On 9th February 2026, the seminar opened with a welcome address by University Librarian Dr. Md. Zahid Hossain Shoeb, followed by remarks from Professor Abdur Rob Khan, Treasurer of NSU. The event featured Dr. Md. Moniruzzaman, Chairman of Bangladesh Association of Librarians, Information Scientists and Documentalists (BALID) and former Head of the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC), as Special Guest, and Dr. Salimullah Khan, Professor, Department of History and Philosophy & Director of the Liberation War Research Center, NSU, as Chief Guest. Professor Nasar U. Ahmed, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, NSU, chaired the session, and MM Shoeb, Senior Assistant Librarian, anchored the seminar.

Professor Abdur Rob Khan said, “Libraries are the foundation of academic excellence. By ensuring access to diverse and credible sources of knowledge, we empower students and researchers to think critically, innovate, and contribute to the advancement of society.”

Special Guest Dr. Md. Moniruzzaman discussed the role of libraries in achieving the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by ensuring universal access to information, fostering literacy, advancing digital inclusion, and serving as trusted and safe community spaces. He also stated, “We consider the NSU Library one of the best in Bangladesh for its effective dissemination of information and its continued commitment to supporting academic and research excellence.”

Chief Guest Dr. Salimullah Khan said, “A library is a time machine that connects the past, present, and future. The standard of library management in Bangladesh needs further improvement, and beyond building collections, greater efforts must be made to ensure that these resources are effectively utilized.”

Professor Nasar U. Ahmed, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, NSU, said, “A library is a living place where you can explore new ideas, expand your knowledge, and even talk with your favorite authors through the pages of their books. It is a space that inspires curiosity, creativity, and lifelong learning.”

As part of the celebration, prizes were awarded to the top three library users and borrowers in recognition of their active engagement with academic resources. On 5th February, NSU students, faculty, and administrative officers and staff took part in a colorful rally to mark the beginning of the National Library Day celebrations.
