The Department of Architecture at North South University (NSU) successfully hosted its flagship community engagement event, “Meet the Department Office: Share Your Thoughts,” at AUDI 801. The event brought together students and faculty in a town-hall-style forum to foster open dialogue and share the department’s future vision, a press release said.

The session was led by Department Chairman Shahriar Iqbal Raj, Associate Professor and Architect, who emphasized the importance of student engagement in shaping the future of the architectural profession. In his opening remarks, he stated, “Students, your voice must be recognized among architects, and it has to be loud and strong.” This biannual initiative, unique to NSU’s Department of Architecture, reflects its strong commitment to collaborative governance and inclusive academic development.

During the event, the department announced several major technological and sustainable infrastructure initiatives. Plans are underway to establish a state-of-the-art cloud computing lab powered by GPU clusters to support high-intensity processing and a resource-sharing platform. In addition, a modern Fabrication Lab (Fab Lab) is currently under construction following significant investment in high-performance hardware, aimed at enhancing students’ practical learning experience. In line with the university’s sustainability goals, a rooftop solar project has also been initiated to reduce reliance on external energy sources.

The department also outlined strategic efforts to strengthen its identity and global presence. While already one of the largest architecture schools in Bangladesh, the department aims to further enhance its visibility and improve graduate opportunities. Key focus areas include strengthening alumni networks, promoting student research and thesis work, increasing participation in national and international design competitions, and expanding global engagement through academic exchanges, workshops, and lectures by internationally recognized scholars and architects.

Several new student-centered initiatives were also introduced. A “Charrette” design competition will be launched in the department’s Sky Gallery, enabling students to engage in real-time design problem-solving. Additionally, an Architecture Student Club is scheduled to launch by the mid-Summer Semester of 2026 to promote community engagement and professional networking. The department has also begun preliminary work toward introducing its first Master’s degree programs.

The Chair further highlighted ongoing research initiatives and emerging academic opportunities within the department, which are expected to support students interested in pursuing higher studies abroad and broaden their academic pathways.

The event concluded with career guidance emphasizing the importance of studio culture in shaping future architects. Students were encouraged to remain dedicated to their craft, with a closing message underscoring the value of depth and perseverance: “Don’t judge a book by its cover.”
