Prime Minister’s Adviser and spokesperson Mahdi Amin said the government has taken an initiative to distribute school bags and uniforms across the country in phases, aiming to promote locally produced goods among young students.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting at the Secretariat on Wednesday (April 22), he said that as a pilot project, two Class One students from each upazila will receive jute bags and school uniforms starting next July. In the first month, more than 100,000 students are expected to benefit.

He said the programme will be implemented jointly by the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, the Ministry of Textiles and Jute, and the Ministry of Local Government. Distribution will gradually expand, covering two upazilas each month before reaching all primary schools nationwide.

Mahdi Amin said the initiative is part of a broader effort to promote the “Made in Bangladesh” concept globally by introducing domestically produced items to children from an early age. He added that it also aims to ensure greater equality among students by reducing visible economic differences.

He further said the use of jute bags will help build environmental awareness among children and encourage a shift away from polythene towards eco-friendly products, while also supporting the revival of the country’s traditional jute sector.

The adviser added that the programme will eventually expand to marginalised areas and be scaled up nationwide as part of the government’s long-term plan to promote local products and sustainable practices.
