PM inaugurates Dharar canal re-excavation in Trishal

MYMENSINGH : Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today inaugurated the re-excavation work of the nearly extinct Dharar Canal (Boilor Canal) in Dariarpur under Trishal upazila here, a canal closely linked to the memory of his father, Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman.

The Prime Minister arrived in Trishal by road from Dhaka around 2:15 pm. After arrival, he first unveiled the plaque of the project amid stormy weather, and later formally launched the excavation work by cutting soil with a spade.

Tarique Rahman also planted a palm sapling beside the canal.

Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu, State Minister for Textiles and Jute Md Shariful Alam, local lawmaker Mahbubur Rahman Liton and Mymensingh Zila Parishad Administrator Syed Emran Saleh Prince were present on the occasion.

The 3.1-kilometre Dharar canal was originally excavated on September 6, 1979, under the initiative of former President Ziaur Rahman. Over time, the canal gradually became nearly extinct.

As part of the government’s nationwide canal restoration programme, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, son of former President Ziaur Rahman, inaugurated the re-excavation work of the canal.

After inaugurating the re-excavation work and planting the tree, the Prime Minister addressed local residents from a stage set up next to the canal.

Party leaders and activists welcomed him with loud applause, while local women, marginal farmers, and children also gathered enthusiastically to greet the Prime Minister.
