North South University’s (NSU) Media, Communication, and Journalism program (MCJ) organised a day-long training session titled “Digital Journalism: Information Credibility and AI Literacy Training 2025”, sponsored by Google and organised by Prothom Alo on Thursday, 9 October 2025, at AUDI 801, a press release said.
Professor Dr. Md. Rizwanul Islam, Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS); Dr. Rizwan Khair, Chair of the Department of Political Science and Sociology; and Dr. Md. Saiful Alam Chowdhury, Associate Professor of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, University of Dhaka; Maliha Tabassum, Assistant Professor, Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP); Dr. Md Abdul Kabil Khan, Associate Professor & Director of MSS Program, Daffodil International University (DIU), were present at the inauguration session. The event was also attended by the Prothom Alo team. Dr. S. M. Rezwan Ul Alam, Associate Professor and MCJ program coordinator, moderated the session.
This initiative brought together eighty students from NSU’s MCJ program, offering them a valuable opportunity to engage with distinguished trainers and digital media experts. The training aimed to enhance participants’ AI literacy, information verification skills, and digital reporting capabilities, which are essential competencies for modern journalism.
Professor Rizwanul Islam highlighted the growing role of AI, “There is no digital journalism right now without AI. Still, I must advise upcoming professionals (students) to treat it as a tool of convenience, not the only source of generating content”.
A F M Khayrul Basher, Senior Manager, Ad Operations, Prothom Alo Digital, emphasised the importance of addressing misinformation and disinformation, noting that these challenges are among the core reasons for the Google News Initiative’s focus on credibility and AI literacy training for media and journalism students.
While giving a vote of thanks, Dr. Rizwan Khair thanked the organizers for collaborating with NSU, which will enable the MCJ students with AI literacy and provide them with early ethical training.
Throughout the day, participants engaged in interactive, practice-based sessions covering key aspects of modern journalism. These included research and reporting focusing on verification, AI tools in journalism such as Gemini, investigative techniques using Google Trends and data insights, and exploring digital journalism through NoteBook LM. The event concluded with vibrant musical performances organised by the MCJ students.
