DHAKA : The Department of Architecture at North South University (NSU) organized a socially responsive event titled “Meet the Parents” on October 20, 2025, at AUDI 801, NSU. The initiative reflects the department’s ongoing commitment to fostering open communication, collaboration, and mutual understanding among faculty, students, and their families, a press release said.

The event was chaired by Assoc. Prof. Shahriar Iqbal Raj, Chair of the Department of Architecture, and attended by Ar. AKM Saleh Ahmed Anik, Lecturer and Studio Instructor of the ARC 111 course. Parents of newly admitted students were invited to participate in an open and meaningful dialogue with the faculty members.

In his opening remarks, Assoc. Prof. Shahriar Iqbal Raj welcomed all guests and emphasized that architectural education at NSU is not merely an academic pursuit but “a journey of the mind and soul.” He noted that architecture is a demanding, creative, and often misunderstood discipline — one that holds transformative power for individuals and society. “We make our dreams with someone else’s money,” he remarked, highlighting the professional challenges and responsibilities faced by architects.

Assoc. Prof. Raj further discussed the increasing competitiveness of the program and the growing need for well-trained architects in Bangladesh, particularly in suburban areas where engineers often assume design responsibilities. He underscored the importance of character, communication, and resilience in architectural training, stating that “failure is the motivation for the next step.”

He also spoke about the holistic development of students through participation in over 22 student clubs on campus, noting that NSU students remain active in co-curricular activities and free from political influences.

Following his remarks, the floor was opened to parents, who expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to engage directly with faculty. Many emphasized the importance of discipline, dedication, and academic focus. Some suggested extending class hours to enhance student learning, while others proposed transportation support for students commuting from distant areas. One parent proudly shared, “I’m honored that my son is studying at NSU,” while another thanked the department for hosting such an inclusive and thoughtful event.

Students also voiced their perspectives, echoing the need for improved transportation facilities and expressing gratitude for the academic and extracurricular support they receive from NSU.

The session concluded with a vote of thanks from Depat. Chair, who appreciated the active participation of both parents and students. He reaffirmed the department’s dedication to nurturing a responsive, transparent, and student-centered learning environment.

“Meet the Parents” ended on a hopeful note, reinforcing the shared commitment of NSU, its students, and families to building a future grounded in creativity, integrity, and collaboration.
