A condolence meeting and prayer mahfil were held at Eastern University premises yesterday in memory of late Associate Professor Md. Iftekhar Mahmud of the Department of Law. The event became an emotional remembrance event in the presence of teachers, students, administrative officers, colleagues and his family members, a press release said.
Since his passing, a deep void has been felt at every level of the university family. He was not just a teacher — he was a beacon of light spreading the light of knowledge. His humane behavior towards students, calm nature and inspiring role earned him the genuine love of everyone. In addition, he was a writer, having written seven books on the depth of life and philosophy — which established him in the reading community as a thoughtful and thoughtful researcher-writer. October 30, 2025 will be marked as a day of irreparable mourning for the Eastern University family.
The Honorable Vice Chancellor of Eastern University, Professor Dr. Farid Ahmed Sobhani, delivered a speech at the event. He said that just as the fragrance of a flower is hidden within the petals of a flower, similarly Iftekhar Mahmud is hidden in his words in his literary works. He has shown even the dying how to live among everyone. The Vice Chancellor paid deep tribute to the professional contribution, human character and academic dedication of the late teacher. In addition, Treasurer Professor Md. Shamsul Huda, Registrar Dr. Abul Bashar Khan, Dean of the Faculty of Law A.B.M. Imdadul Haque Khan, Dean of the Faculty of Technology and Engineering Professor Dr. Md. Mahfuzur Rahman, Dean of the Faculty of Business Administration Professor Dr. M. Sayedur Rahman, Chairman of the Department of Law Mohammad Mamunur Rashid, Chairman of the Department of English Md. Rafiussan and Dr. Md. Zahurul Haque, former Dean and Chair of the Faculty of Law. They highlighted the wisdom, leadership and contribution of the late teacher in the field of education.
Among the former colleagues of the late Iftekhar Mahmud, the first Chairperson of the Law Department of Eastern University, Ishrat Azim Ahmad, former Chairman Dr. Abdul Awal Khan (current Professor, IUB), former Assistant Professor, Rehnuma Binte Mamun (Faculty of Law, IUB), and Golam Sarwar, Assistant Professor, Law Department, DU, shared their memories and personal feelings. His classmates and friends Lt. Col. Nazmul Haque and Munawar Hossain also expressed their emotions in their recollections. The most touching moment of the program was the speech of his only daughter Manisha Taif. The memory of the father, the power of his thoughts and the beauty of his words – it seemed to come alive in Manisha’s voice. His wife Tania Nasreen also shared her memories respectfully on behalf of the family.
Iftekhar Mahmud was a gentle, quiet, strong in values and enlightened person. After completing his higher secondary from Rajshahi Cadet College, he started his educational career from the Law Department of Rajshahi University. By choosing teaching as his profession, he has spread light in the lives of countless students. He was an embodiment of knowledge, inspiration and humanity in the Faculty of Law of Eastern University. The Eastern University family remembers this beloved teacher with deep respect and love. He will remain immortal in the memory of the university family.
