A dengue prevention campaign has been carried out in Narayanganj under BRAC’s Health Programme, particularly its “Climate Change and Health” project. To mark the completion of the campaign, a discussion meeting was held on Sunday (23 November) at the conference room of Narayanganj City Corporation, a press release said.
The meeting was presided over by Dr. Nafiya Islam, Medical Officer of Narayanganj City Corporation. Md. Nur Kutubul Alam, Acting Chief Executive Officer and Secretary of the City Corporation, attended the event as the chief guest. Dr. Abul Fazl Muhammad Mosiur Rahman, Civil Surgeon of Narayanganj, was present as the special guest.
Speakers at the event included Dr. Zahirul Islam, Residential Medical Officer of Narayanganj General (Victoria) Hospital; Dr. Umme Farhana, Health & Family Planning Officer of Sadar Upazila; Dr. As-Saba Hossain, Project Manager; Suman Chowdhury, District Coordinator of BRAC; and Md. Shamim Al Mamun Khan, District Manager.
The meeting was moderated by Mahmudul Hasan, Sadar BRAC Officer. Officials from the City Corporation, the Local Government Division and the Health Department were also present.
Speakers highlighted that climate change is exacerbating public health risks, including dengue, malaria, waterborne diseases and respiratory illnesses. Rising temperatures, irregular rainfall, floods and cyclones are disproportionately affecting poor and vulnerable populations.
BRAC’s new “Climate Change and Health” project, funded by the Global Fund and led by CDC under the NMP/DGHS, aims to strengthen climate resilience in the health sector. The project focuses on disease surveillance, early warning systems and enhancing community-level preparedness.
