BGMEA hosts reception, iftar for garment sector MPs-elect

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA)  Thursday hosted a reception and iftar mahfil in honour of MPs elected from garment industry in the 13th National Parliament election. The reception and iftar and prayer mahfil were organised at the Golf Garden of Army Golf Club in the capital, a press release said.

The reception, presided over by BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan, was attended by Md. Shahadat Hossain, MP (Lakshmipur – 1); Md. Abdullah, MP (Munshiganj – 1); Md. Lutfar Rahman, MP (Tangail – 4); Md. Abul Kalam, MP (Comilla – 9); Md. Khaled Hossain Mahbub, MP (Brahmanbaria – 3); and Ershad Ullah, MP (Chittagong-8).

Also present were the Honorable State Minister of Commerce, Mr. Md. Shariful Alam MP, Honorable State Minister of Housing and Public Works, Mr. Ahmed Sohel Manzur MP, and Advisor to the Honorable Prime Minister (Ministry of Education, Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, Ministry of Expatriates Welfare and Overseas Employment, and Ministry of Labor and Employment), Mr. Mahadi Amin. The program was attended by BGMEA office bearers, members of the Board of Directors, general members, prominent businessmen of the country, and representatives of the media.

At the beginning of the program, the BGMEA President welcomed the Honorable Members of Parliament, Honorable State Ministers, and Honorable Advisors on the stage with flowers and crests.

In his speech, BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan warmly congratulated the Honorable Members of Parliament and said that this victory of the members of the garment industry family is a victory for the entire sector. He expressed the hope that when the honorable members of parliament talk about the problems and development activities of their respective areas in the great parliament, they will also talk about the industry – highlighting the continuous struggle of the entrepreneurs of the garment sector. The newly elected members of parliament will play an important role in the policy-making stage as a strong voice of the garment industry in the National Parliament. He further expressed the hope that the honorable members of parliament will provide fair solutions for export diversification, and ease of doing business and reduce the cost of doing business, and above all in the interest of the economy.

Former Vice President of BGMEA Md. Lutfar Rahman, MP, spoke on behalf of the honorable members of parliament at the event. He said that the development of the garment industry began during the time of martyred President Ziaur Rahman. He said that the elected members of parliament from the garment sector will take all-out initiatives so that the garment industry moves forward further – so that the economy of Bangladesh becomes stronger.

First Vice President of BGMEA Selim Rahman delivered the welcome speech at the event. He expressed hope that the experience of the newly elected MPs will be helpful in formulating industry and trade-friendly policies in the National Parliament.

It is noteworthy that the 16 honorable MPs elected to the 13th National Parliament from the garment industry family are:

Ahmed Sohel Manjur, MP (Pirojpur-2); Md. Lutfar Rahman, MP (Tangail – 4); Md. Zakir Hossain, MP (Mymensingh – 5); Md. Shariful Alam, MP (Kishoreganj – 6); Afroza Khanam, MP (Manikganj – 3); Md. Abdullah, MP (Munshiganj – 1); Shama Obaid Islam, MP (Faridpur – 2); Khandaker Abdul Muktadir, MP (Sylhet – 1); S. M. Faisal, MP (Habiganj – 4); Md. Khaled Hossain Mahbub, MP (Brahmanbaria – 3); Zakaria Taher, MP (Comilla – 8); Md. Abul Kalam, MP (Comilla – 9); Md. Abdul Hannan, MP (Chandpur-4); Zainul Abdin Faruk, MP (Noakhali – 2); Md. Shahadat Hossain, MP (Lakshmipur – 1); and Ershad Ullah, MP (Chittagong – 8).

Immediately after the reception, a prayer meeting was held to pray for the well-being of the country and the people. The festive event ended with Iftar.
