Human beings are mortal. Within this brief span of life, people struggle in various ways to build a meaningful existence. In this limited time, they nurture countless dreams as a reason to live. Sometimes they encounter the light of success, and at other times they fall into the darkness of failure and suffer from feelings of inferiority. This despair and psychological turmoil are reflections of deeper crises hidden within society. As a result, the roots of suicide are profoundly intertwined with social realities. In essence, human life, thoughts, and behaviors are closely connected with society. When individuals begin to feel helpless and isolated and can find no solution to their problems, they may sometimes choose the extreme and tragic path of suicide. Therefore, suicide is not merely a personal tragedy. As this self-destructive tendency continues to grow within society, it has now become a serious social crisis. Health refers to the complete well-being of both body and mind. In our society, however, health is primarily understood in terms of physical well-being, while mental health remains largely neglected. We tend to consider physical fitness as the primary foundation of happiness. Yet when the mind is healthy, it positively influences a person’s daily life, as well as family and social relationships. Conversely, mental illness brings distress into people’s lives, gradually isolating them from positive environments and causing profound suffering. In reality, mental health remains a neglected issue. As a result, various psychosocial problems are emerging in our society. The dark shadow of these psychosocial problems has gone beyond the boundaries of family and community and has turned into a national social crisis. In developed countries, mental health is given significant importance and priority. However, in developing countries like Bangladesh, mental health is still not examined with the seriousness it deserves. When a problem affects society as a whole, it ultimately becomes a national social crisis. Suicide reflects the fragility of the relationship between individuals and society. Unfortunately, recent realities show that suicide is spreading like an epidemic. According to statistics in Bangladesh, the suicide rate is rising. Various factors such as family conflicts, marital separation, financial hardship, deterioration of relationships, and the lack of proper socialization of children play crucial roles as triggers of psychological distress. When family bonds weaken, social empathy declines, and individuals are deprived of emotional support, people begin to isolate themselves. At the extreme stage of this isolation, individuals may be pushed toward despair and self-destructive thoughts. Therefore, awareness must be increased to control psychosocial problems. In this regard, the government and relevant non-governmental organizations must play an active role by organizing seminars and providing counseling services related to mental health. These seminars should address various aspects of mental health and discuss ways to achieve psychological well-being, so that people at all levels of society become aware of the importance of mental health. A survey by the Aanchal Foundation revealed that “403 students committed suicide in one year.” So counseling programs should also be arranged in schools and colleges from rural to urban areas. Through such programs, students can receive psychological support and overcome despair and feelings of inferiority. In our society, there exists a stigma surrounding mental illness. Many people fail to give importance to psychological suffering and are unable to seek help due to social shame. As a result, their problems gradually deepen and eventually reach a critical stage. Therefore, emotional support should be provided through counseling programs at different levels, which can help reduce psychological pressure. Moreover, in modern lifestyles, mental health is subjected to multifaceted pressures. Particularly among the younger generation, the conflict between expectations and reality often intensifies feelings of frustration. Economic pressure and unemployment are among the major social causes of suicide. Uncertainty in employment and anxiety about the future leave young people psychologically distressed. In this age of information technology, digital platforms can be used to inspire people through motivational videos and messages. Social media can also be utilized to spread awareness about mental health and encourage positive perspectives toward psychological well-being. Therefore, to prevent suicide, it is not enough to blame individuals alone; rather, society must become more compassionate, supportive, and aware. At the national level, effective implementation of mental health policies is essential. Since family conflicts, marital disputes, social discrimination, and humiliation can also increase suicidal tendencies, mentally distressed individuals should not be pushed into further isolation by society. For this reason, the people of the country must be educated about mental health so that they do not underestimate its importance and become more attentive to mental health services. Above all, mental health must be given priority in achieving the country’s sustainable development goals. Through coordinated efforts at all levels, the social crisis of suicide must be addressed. Ensuring the nation’s development requires the resolution of this crisis, which is essential for building a healthy, humane, and productive society. Through coordinated policy initiatives that ensure health policies, social awareness, family support, mutual empathy among people, and social security, this neglected crisis can be confronted, ultimately laying the foundation for a healthy society and a productive nation.
