Every year on the 8th of March, International Women’s Day is observed across the globe. This day is not merely an occasion for celebration; rather, it is a hymn to womanhood and a historical landmark for the realization of rights. In the 19th century, when inhuman exploitation was rampant in factories, a group of fearless women was the first to raise their voices against such oppression. Following the legacy of that movement, the 8th of March is recognized worldwide today as a day for establishing the dignity and rights of women. This turning point in history reminds us that respect or rights are never granted voluntarily; they must be earned through merit and courage.
While the position of women in modern civilization is much more consolidated than in the past, we still have a long way to go to achieve complete equality. Women’s active participation is essential for building a prosperous society because men and women are two sides of the same coin. In the course of social evolution, we see that whenever women are given proper opportunities, they have proven their excellence. From the finesse of domestic chores to conquering mountain peaks or measuring the depths of the ocean—the name of woman is intertwined everywhere today.
Yet, there was a time when a woman’s identity was confined within four walls. Transcending those dark times, women today are guiding society as beacons of light. When the light of education enters a woman’s life, it illuminates not just one life, but an entire generation. An educated mother is the architect of a healthy and strong nation. Therefore, by women’s empowerment, we mean involving them in the decision-making process.
Economic independence acts as a massive shield for women. When a woman can manage her life through her own earnings, her sense of self-respect increases significantly. The efficiency women are currently demonstrating in statecraft and administration is unique. In the context of our country, the successful presence of women as Prime Minister, Opposition Leader, and Speaker of the National Parliament is a marvel to the world. In this golden age of information technology, women are connecting to the global market from home through the internet. As a result, an unprecedented change is being observed in the rural economy. As small entrepreneurs, women are creating employment opportunities for thousands of people today.
Nevertheless, some social barriers and conservative mindsets still seek to hinder the progress of women. To overcome these obstacles, we need a radical change in our perspective. Violence or discriminatory behavior toward women is not only harmful to women but is also a matter of shame for the entire human race. Every girl child must be taught to be self-reliant from childhood. She must be made to understand that she is not a “weak being” but a vessel of infinite potential.
On the occasion of Women’s Day, our vow should be to build a world where no woman is harassed because of her attire or gender identity. Ensuring a safe environment for women in the workplace is the responsibility of the state as well as all of us. If we can ensure the correct valuation of labor by removing wage discrimination, the pace of development will accelerate further.
Today, the way our girls are flying the “Red and Green” flag on foreign soil in sports makes us proud. From football to cricket, their triumph is everywhere. This success teaches us that if given the opportunity, women can achieve the impossible. Women’s contributions to culture and literature will remain forever immortal. Through creative work, they are highlighting the deepest emotions of the human mind.
No nation can ever reach the pinnacle of progress by leaving half of its population behind. Therefore, women must be accepted as equal partners at every level of development. It is impossible to determine a financial value for a woman’s contribution to the family. The selfless way a woman works from morning till night is more strenuous than any other hard labor in the world. Recognizing this contribution and showing her proper respect is our moral duty.
Women’s Day reminds us repeatedly that beyond the identity of a mother, sister, or wife, a woman is a complete human being. She has her own thoughts, consciousness, and the right to dream. It is our expectation that society plays a supportive role in realizing those dreams. Let the world of tomorrow be free of discrimination and filled with peace, where every woman can develop her talent with a fearless heart. Breaking through decay and darkness, may woman shine in her own light. May the spirit of Women’s Day spread every day of the year and into the heart of every human being. Let the name of woman be written in golden letters in the pages of history within the victory song of humanity. Let this be our commitment and the motto for a beautiful world ahead.
