Bangladesh Society for Private University Academics (BSPUA), in collaboration with North South University (NSU), organized a Roundtable Discussion and Iftar 2026 titled “Higher Education Landscape of Bangladesh: Contemporary Thoughts” at the Syndicate Hall of North South University in Bashundhara today. The event brought together policymakers, academic leaders, and scholars to discuss current challenges, opportunities, and the future direction of higher education in Bangladesh.

The roundtable featured distinguished guests including Chief Guest Bobby Hajjaj, Hon’ble State Minister of the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education; Special Guest Dr. Md. Sabur Khan, Chairman of the Association of Private Universities of Bangladesh; Special Guest Mr. Benajir Ahmed, Founder Life Member and Former Chairman of the Board of Trustees of NSU; Special Guest Prof. Abdul Hannan Chowdhury, Vice-Chancellor of North South University; and Session Chair Prof. Farid A. Sobhani, Vice-Chancellor of Eastern University and President of BSPUA.

In his address as the Chief Guest, Bobby Hajjaj emphasized that policy support and academic excellence must go hand in hand to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving global economy. He said, “We need evidence-based policy. We have to listen to all stakeholders, including students and educators, to build a stronger and more inclusive higher education system for the future.”

Speaking as a Special Guest, Dr. Md. Sabur Khan remarked, “Private universities have now become an important pillar of higher education in the country. However, to expand higher education, we must strengthen all levels of the education system. Participation from all stakeholders is necessary in formulating policies in the education sector.”

Mr. Benajir Ahmed said, “Most of the higher-ranked universities in the world are privately driven. The government should support private universities both financially and through supportive policies and a conducive regulatory environment.”

Prof. Abdul Hannan Chowdhury, Vice-Chancellor of North South University, emphasized the importance of academic quality and global engagement. He said, “Bangladesh’s higher education sector is undergoing rapid transformation. To remain competitive globally, universities must place greater emphasis on research, the use of technology, and international collaboration.”

Chairing the session, Prof. Farid A. Sobhani said, “Regular dialogue among academics is essential for the future development of higher education. Discussions like this allow us to exchange ideas and identify practical solutions for improving the higher education sector in Bangladesh. Sustainable progress requires strong collaboration among universities, policymakers, and the industry.”

The roundtable concluded with an Iftar gathering that fostered a spirit of reflection and unity during the holy month of Ramadan. Participants expressed hope that such dialogues would contribute to shaping policies and strategies for the continued development of Bangladesh’s higher education sector.
