DHAKA : Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni today said the government wants to build an effective and lively parliament.

“All problems over the parliament can be resolved only through discussion and dialogue,” he told reporters after Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s meeting with the ruling party parliamentarians at Sangshad Bhaban here.

He said today’s national parliament is a continuous reflection of the long political struggle and sacrifices made by the prime minister to establish the people’s right to vote and consolidate democracy.

The parliament is not just a constitutional institution but a symbol of the rights, dignity and democratic aspirations of the people of Bangladesh, Moni said.

He said the first session of the national parliament is going to begin tomorrow, reflecting the hopes, aspirations, trust and expectations of the country’s people.

Seeking prayers and support from the country’s people, the Chief Whip said the parliament session beginning tomorrow will be a people’s parliament – a supreme democratic institution representing the rights, hopes and dreams of the people of the country.

“Our goal is to run an effective, vibrant and responsible parliament. We want an environment of constructive discussions, rational arguments and healthy debates to be created in the parliament on issues of national importance,” he said.

Moni said finding solutions to national problems through talks despite having differences of opinion is the beauty of democracy. “For that purpose, we are determined to make the parliament an effective and meaningful one,” he added.

He also sought support from the country’s people to this end and expected the constructive role and cooperation from the opposition party too.

“We believe that it is possible to resolve national issues on the basis of mutual respect, dialogue and consensus and that is the path that will take the nation towards a stronger and more self-reliant future,” the Chief Whip said.

The government’s commitment is to improve the living standards of the commoners, he said.

“Our main goal is to turn the hopes and aspirations of the people into reality through an effective parliament,” he added.

Moni urged the country’s people to cooperate with the government to build a strong, democratic and prosperous Bangladesh.
