People have begun returning to Dhaka after the extended holidays surrounding Eid and Independence Day, bringing the capital gradually back to its usual rhythm.
Traffic on the streets has increased compared with the past few days, but the city’s familiar gridlock has yet to return.
Observations across several areas on Saturday showed heavier traffic in the morning, which eased as the day progressed.
In the morning, roads in Uttara, Airport and Khilkhet experienced increased pressure as office-goers, returning passengers and public transport moved through the city. Traffic slowed in some places, with brief congestion causing delays even on short routes.
Along the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway, vehicles moved steadily, although there were moments of slow movement due to increased traffic.
The area around the airport saw the highest pressure in the morning. A large number of passengers arriving by train gathered at the airport railway station at the same time, creating temporary crowding. As they left using CNGs, private cars and ride-sharing services, the number of vehicles on nearby roads increased, slowing traffic for a while.
A similar situation was observed in Uttara and Khilkhet. Although traffic was heavy in the morning, it did not turn into prolonged congestion. Vehicles continued moving, though at a slower pace.
By noon, the situation improved noticeably. Traffic pressure decreased and most roads returned to normal flow. In some areas, streets appeared relatively clear, and congestion largely disappeared.
Traffic police were active at key intersections throughout the day, managing signals and helping maintain steady movement. While the morning hours were busier, the overall situation remained under control.
Officials said the return of people to the capital after the holidays created temporary pressure on the roads. However, as people are returning in phases, the congestion has remained manageable.
They expect traffic to return to its usual busy pattern in the coming days.
Meanwhile, although offices have reopened, classes at schools, colleges and universities are set to resume Sunday, which may increase traffic pressure from the next working day.
The extended holiday period began on March 17 for Eid and continued through Independence Day on March 26, followed by the weekend.
