BGMEA has requested Bangladesh Bank to strengthen policy support of Bangladesh Bank to address the current multidimensional challenges of the garment industry and to extend the application deadline under BRPD Circular-07/2025, a press release said.

Yesterday, Wednesday (April 22, 2026), a delegation led by BGMEA Director Majumder Arifur Rahman made this request during a courtesy call on Deputy Governor Dr. Md. Kabir Ahmed at Bangladesh Bank Bhaban. Former Vice President Shahidul Islam and Chairman of Public Relations and Publicity Committee Masud Kabir were also present in the delegation. Mohammad Salauddin Tapadar, Additional Director of Banking Regulation and Policy Department of Bangladesh Bank, and senior officials of Bangladesh Bank were also present at the time.

In the meeting, the BGMEA delegation sought cooperation on the following issues: Extending the deadline for defaulting accounts for policy support under BRPD Circular-07/2025 from November 2025 to March 31, 2026.

This will enable many new sick and troubled industrial institutions to come under the scope of policy support, which will help in restoring their businesses to normal. At the same time, non-performing loans (NPL) in the banking sector will be reduced and overall financial stability will be strengthened.

Providing effective and mandatory instructions to commercial banks to properly implement the conditions of policy support announced by Bangladesh Bank.

In many cases, commercial banks have failed to implement the policy support announced by Bangladesh Bank in a timely and appropriate manner, leaving many eligible institutions deprived of this facility. In that case, ensuring clear and effective instructions from the central bank will increase industrial production and the affected institutions will be able to return to profitability and economic activities will regain momentum.

Extension of application period for reopening closed factories. Welcoming this initiative of the government, it was opined that extension of application period is necessary for the purpose of collecting and verifying accurate information of the actual affected factories. This will enable preparation of a realistic and accurate list, which will play a helpful role in implementing effective rehabilitation and revitalization activities.

The Deputy Governor listened carefully to the issues raised by the BGMEA delegation and assured to take necessary and effective steps in this regard.
