EU hosts seminar on Islamic finance, banking, insurance

Eastern University has launched a low-cost quality BBA and MBA program in Islamic Finance, Banking and Insurance for the first time in the country. In this context, an important seminar titled “Islamic Finance, Banking and Insurance in Bangladesh” was held in Dhaka today (Saturday). The seminar, organized on the prospects, challenges and future directions of Islamic economics, banking and insurance sectors in the context of the country, was attended by eminent personalities, academicians and students from the relevant sectors, a press release said.

The seminar was chaired by Eastern University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Farid A. Sobhani and was presented by Islamic economist and Sharia Consultant Mufti Abdullah Masum, Founder Director, IFA Consultancy.  Brigadier General (Retd) Prof. Dr. AKM Iqbal Azim, Dean, School of Business, Eastern University, delivered the keynote address.

Abul Kasem Haider, Founding Chairman and Member of the Board of Trustees, Eastern University, delivered the keynote address as the chief guest. Dr. (Mufti) Yusuf Sultan, Founder and CEO, ADL Advisory, Malaysia and Member of the Shariah Advisory Board of Bangladesh Bank, delivered the keynote address as the guest.

Other speakers at the seminar were Dr. K. M. Zakir Hossain, Assistant Program Director, Bangladesh Institute of Islamic Finance; Md. Habibur Rahman, Senior Executive Vice President, Islami Bank; and Dr. Abul Bashar Khan, Registrar, Eastern University.

Notable among the distinguished guests were Mufti Ahsanul Islam, Vice Principal, Center for Islamic Economic Studies; Mufti Sajjadur Rahman, Vice Principal of Malikul Mulk Madrasa; Mufti Abdul Malek, Mufti of Jamia Muhammadiya Islamia Madrasa; and Mufti Tauhidul Islam, Mufti of Jamia Rahmania Arabia Madrasa.

The speakers said that the importance of Islamic finance, banking and insurance sectors is increasing day by day in the growing economy of Bangladesh. For the sustainable development of this sector, it is essential to create skilled human resources, strengthen research and establish effective linkages between academia and industry.

The seminar created an effective platform for knowledge exchange and networking among bankers, academicians, researchers and Islamic scholars. The participants called for the continuation of such initiatives in the future, stating that such an event was timely.
