BRAC University hosted a daylong program on the Merul Badda campus in Dhaka today (Monday, 27 April 2026), commemorating the lasting contributions of the university’s founder, Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, marking his 90th birthday, a press release said.

Vice‑Chancellor Professor Syed Ferhat Anwar also formally kicked off BRAC University’s 25th anniversary celebrations unveiling the Silver Jubilee logo. The university was founded on 16 June 2001.

The day’s events sought to honor Sir Abed’s enduring legacy and values, which continue to guide generations towards building a more just, inclusive, and compassionate society.

Titled “Celebration of Abed Bhai’s Life and Legacy”, the program started in the morning with a photo exhibition giving an insight into how the founder of BRAC advanced social development in Bangladesh and beyond.

Running in parallel, the Sir Fazle Hasan Abed Open Rated Chess Tournament 2026 saw the participation of over 300 players from across Bangladesh, paying tribute to Sir Abed’s lifelong commitment to nurturing human potential.

A friendly six-a-side football match titled “জীবনের জয়গান ফুটবল ম্যাচ” was also organized featuring players from BRAC Secondary School of Purbogangabordi (Faridpur Sadar) and BRAC University. The initiative reflected Sir Abed’s belief in inclusivity, youth empowerment, and community building.

In the afternoon, students showcased music, dance, and artistic expressions through cultural performances inspired by Sir Abed’s ideals and legacy. Office of Communications Director Khairul Basher moderated this segment.

The program concluded with Board of Trustees Chairperson Tamara Hasan Abed and Member Salahdin Irshad Imam, the vice-chancellor, Treasurer Ariful Islam and Registrar Dave Dowland presenting the awards of the football tournament.

“We have a yearlong extensive list of celebrations, recognitions, togetherness…building bonds with ourselves, the ecosystem, with partners abroad…we will be involving everybody,” commented Tamara.
