‎British High Commissioner Sarah Cooke has reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s commitment to a “modern, strategic relationship” with Bangladesh as the nation navigates its graduation from Least Developed Country (LDC) status.

‎Speaking at a Diplomatic Correspondents Association of Bangladesh (DCAB) talk on Tuesday, the High Commissioner described the UK as a reliable, long-term ally dedicated to supporting the country’s “remarkable transformation.”

‎A central pillar of the address was the UK’s Developing Countries Trading Scheme, which currently provides duty-free access for 99.8% of Bangladeshi product lines.

‎‎High Commissioner Cooke assured that following LDC graduation, a three-year transition period will ensure that 92% of goods—including the vital ready-made garment sector—remain duty-free.

‎This economic continuity is bolstered by a £450 million investment pledge from British International Investment and up to £2 billion in export finance available for infrastructure and green energy projects.

‎‎The High Commissioner also struck a firm tone on financial governance, revealing that the UK has frozen over £250 million in assets linked to Bangladeshi individuals since June 2025.

‎‎She announced that London will host an Illicit Finance Summit this June to strengthen international cooperation against financial crime.

‎‎Beyond economics, the partnership is deepening through security and climate action. Cooke highlighted the transfer of the former HMS Enterprise to the Bangladesh Navy to support “Blue Economy” ambitions and maritime safety.

‎‎She also reaffirmed the UK’s humanitarian commitment to the Rohingya crisis, with over £458 million provided since 2017.

‎‎Welcoming the peaceful democratic transition under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, the High Commissioner concluded that the UK remains a steadfast partner in an increasingly volatile global environment.
