BRAC University marked the International Day of the Midwife 2026 on May 5 with a series of events to strengthen awareness and understanding of the vital role of midwives in advancing quality, respectful, and equitable maternity care, a press release said.

The celebrations were organized by the Midwifery Education Program (MEP) of the BRAC James P Grant School of Public Health under the global theme “One Million More Midwives”, highlighting the estimated workforce required worldwide to meet essential healthcare needs.

The day began with a vibrant procession through Mohammadpur and Shyamoli, followed by a cultural program at the MEP’s academic site in Adabor. The program featured performances, including a drama, to showcase the importance of midwifery in maternal and newborn health.

As part of the observance, an awareness session was held on 4 May 2026 at T&T Adarsha Mohila College in Mohakhali, aiming to promote health consciousness among students. The session focused on maternal health, newborn care, and preventive healthcare practices.

A capping ceremony was also organized for students of the MEP’s 12th batch, symbolizing their readiness to undertake clinical responsibilities and marking an important milestone in their professional journey.

Addressing the event, Dr. Sharmina Rahman, director of the Midwifery Education and Nursing Program, emphasized the significance of the midwifery profession, noting both its challenges and future potential.

She highlighted that strengthening midwifery education and professional capacity can play a crucial role in improving maternal healthcare services in Bangladesh.

Parvin Sultana, a representative from the Mohammadpur Fertility Services and Training Centre, underscored the importance of hands-on training.

She noted that practical experience equips students to effectively respond to real-life challenges, contributing to the reduction of maternal and neonatal mortality rates.
