BGMEA delegation meets PM Tarique Rahman

Top leaders of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) held a very cordial and fruitful meeting with Hon’ble Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to resolve the current crisis of the readymade garment industry, the main driving force of the country’s economy, ensure future prospects and sustainable growth of export trade, a press release said.

The meeting was attended by Hon’ble Minister of Housing and Public Works Zakaria Taher Suman, Hon’ble Minister of Education Ehsanul Haque Milon, Hon’ble Minister of Commerce, Industries, Textiles and Jute Khandaker Abdul Muktadir and Hon’ble Advisor Mahdi Amin.

This high-level meeting was held at the Prime Minister’s Office, Cabinet Division, Bangladesh Secretariat on Monday (May 11) afternoon.  BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan Babu led the delegation.

The meeting particularly emphasized on product diversification, expanding the potential of the export sector and strengthening Bangladesh’s competitiveness in the global market. The Honorable Prime Minister called on BGMEA to take the lead in diversifying export trade, especially by increasing the use of man-made fibers (MMF) and increasing Bangladesh’s competitiveness in the global market by manufacturing high-value garments.

BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan warmly welcomed the government’s timely decision to set up a special fund to revive the closed factories and called for utmost care in the selection of factories to ensure maximum transparency in this process so that no misuse of funds occurs.

At the same time, he proposed to provide special policy support to factories currently struggling to survive in the face of global and domestic adversities, so that factories are saved from closure and the employment of millions of workers is secured.

In the meeting, Hon’ble Prime Minister Tarique Rahman agreed with the BGMEA’s proposal and said that his government will give equal importance to both the issues of reviving the closed factories and protecting the struggling factories that are still operational. He said that necessary policy support will be ensured for the affected factories based on the recommendations of BGMEA.

The BGMEA delegation included Senior Vice President Enamul Haque Khan, Vice President Rezwan Selim, Vice President (Finance) Mizanur Rahman, Vice President Bidiya Amrit Khan, Vice President Shihab Uddoza Chowdhury and Vice President Mohammad Rafiq Chowdhury, among others.

In the meeting, BGMEA expressed deep gratitude and thanks for the timely guidance, sincere cooperation and goodwill of the Hon’ble Prime Minister for the sustainable development of the country’s industrial sector and economy.
