NSU hosts consultation on occupational safety, health course development

The EHS+ Center of North South University (NSU), in collaboration with the International Labour Organization (ILO), successfully organized a Consultation Programme under its ongoing project titled “Comprehensive Certificate Course on Occupational Safety and Health for Undergraduate Students, Graduate Engineers, Architects, and Other Professionals/Practitioners.” The programme was held on 4 May 2026 at the Syndicate Hall of NSU from 9:00 AM to 1:30 PM, a press release said.

The event was graced by Arif Ahmed Khan, Additional Inspector General of the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments (DIFE), and Professor Nasar U. Ahmed, Pro-Vice Chancellor of North South University, who attended as Special Guests.

The programme brought together a diverse and distinguished group of stakeholders, including representatives from international development partners such as the Netherlands, Sweden, Canada, the European Union, and the United Kingdom. Participants also included representatives from leading organizations and institutions such as Epyllion Group, Bangladesh Employers Federation (BEF), Bangladesh Trade Union Sangho, the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Monaco Limited, Socialist Labour Front, BKMEA, and renowned academic institutions including BRAC University, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), and Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST). The event further benefited from the presence of industry experts, senior government officials, and professionals from relevant sectors.

In his remarks, Professor Nasar U. Ahmed highlighted North South University’s continued commitment to academic excellence and its strong collaboration with globally recognized organizations. Representing the ILO, Neeran Ramjuthan, Programme Manager for Labour Administration and Working Conditions (LAWC), Cluster,  commended NSU for its effective implementation of the project and reaffirmed ILO’s support for initiatives that advance occupational safety and health standards.

This initiative is part of ILO’s Advancing Decent Work in Bangladesh project, funded by the Team Europe Initiative of the European Union, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Sweden on Decent Work in Bangladesh and Canada.

A key segment of the programme focused on the presentation of the proposed course module. Dr. Mahmud A. Shareef and Shariar Iqbal Raj presented the curriculum framework, outlining its objectives, structure, and key components designed to address contemporary occupational safety and health challenges.

The presentation was followed by an interactive consultation session, where participants actively engaged in discussions and provided constructive feedback. Key recommendations included ensuring transparency in course delivery, enhancing accessibility for a wider audience, incorporating occupational disease-related topics, and extending the duration of the training programme to deepen learning outcomes.

The programme concluded with a closing session, marking a significant milestone in the development of a comprehensive educational initiative aimed at strengthening occupational safety and health practices in Bangladesh.
