KHULNA : Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Khulna University (KU) Professor Dr Md Rezaul Karim said the online platforms had played a crucial role in July Uprising to oust the fascist Awami League (AL) government.
He made the remarks as the chief guest on Friday evening while inaugurating a documentary show titled “July Awakening: We Are the Media,” on the university’s cafeteria premises.
Organized by the online platforms of Khulna University, Professor Dr. Md. Nazmus Sadat, Director of Student Affairs, spoke as the special guest.
The KU VC said, “During the July uprising, we witnessed how the youth stood up against fascism. While mainstream media was largely under control at the time, Khulna University’s online platforms and social media across the country played a powerful role.”
He further emphasized that these student-run platforms regularly highlight campus events, issues, and potentials in a positive light.
However, he urged that the platforms should focus on constructive criticism without belittling anyone, to preserve the university’s image.
He stated that online platforms can play a vital role in shaping the post-uprising state but warned that losing unity could result in the loss of public engagement.
He cautioned against rumors, character assassination, and mob behavior.
The welcome speech was delivered by Al Mamun from KU Insiders while Mahfuzur Rahman, a representative of Thoughts Behind the KU delivered the conclude speech.
Reflections on the role of KU’s online platforms during the July movement were shared by active movement participants Al Shahriar, Saif Nawaz, and Md. Muhibullah.
Among others, Kazi Rifat Morshed (Thoughts Behind the KU), Zohra Bonani (KU Insiders), and Tayeba Zaman Nairita (KU Talks) addressed.
The event was hosted by Farzana Jahan and Tawkir Zaman Shuvo.
Earlier, the School of Fine Arts organized a children’s art competition titled “Graffiti in the Colors of ’24.”
Students from various institutions in Khulna participated.
At the prize-giving ceremony held at noon, the Vice-Chancellor handed over awards and certificates to the winners.
