NSU hosts lecture on corporate crimes under business law talks series

The Department of Law at North South University (NSU) successfully hosted a session of its “Business Law Talks” series, featuring a special lecture on “Corporate Crimes”, on 19 August, 2025 at the NSU Moot Court Room NAC 616. This insightful discussion convened an audience encompassing students, academics, and legal enthusiasts, keen on learning about the legal and ethical dimensions of corporate misconduct. This session aimed to broaden their perspective and understanding of the crimes in corporate sectors and engage in meaningful academic discourse.

Dr. Md. Rizwanul Islam, professor of law and the dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at NSU, attended the program as the Chief Guest. The keynote address and immersive lecture were delivered by Md Lokman Hussain, Senior Lecturer at Department of Law, NSU.

Advocate Saquib Rahman, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Law at NSU and Coordinator of the Business Law Program, moderated the session and shared his introductory remarks, emphasizing the growing relevance of corporate accountability in a globalized economy.

Professor Dr. Ishtiaque Ahmed, Barrister and Chair of the Department of Law, NSU, delivered the opening remarks. He expressed his sincere gratitude to Md Lokman Hussain for gracing the occasion with his presence and for providing a practical learning session for the attendees. He also underscored the critical importance of understanding corporate crimes in an era of globalization, noting that this area of law is crucial for upholding both economic integrity and public trust. Following this, the Chief Guest Dr. Md. Rizwanul Islam gave a concise speech about the importance of understanding corporate law and its role in ensuring justice and fairness in the business world.

Md Lokman Hussain provided an extensive overview of how corporate entities and their officers can be held liable for a range of criminal offenses, including fraud, money laundering, and corruption. He delved into the legal frameworks and enforcement challenges associated with prosecuting corporate crimes, and discussed the ethical responsibilities of businesses.

During the Q&A segment, the audience engaged in a lively discussion with the speaker on various issues concerning the enforcement of corporate crime laws in Bangladesh, the challenges of proving criminal intent within corporate structures, and the balance between punishing corporations and protecting innocent employees and shareholders.
