In the meeting, the BGMEA President explained in detail to the Governor the problems that garment exporters are currently facing due to the five troubled banks.

He said that due to the severe liquidity crisis in the troubled banks, the banks are not paying the export earnings (returned export value) to the exporters on time even though they have received it, and the banks are even failing to open new letters of credit (LC). At the meeting, BGMEA leaders expressed deep concern and said that if quick steps are not taken to resolve the crisis, many institutions will soon turn into sick industries, as a result, many workers and siblings will lose their jobs and above all, the country’s main export sector will be put at further risk, which is not at all desirable.

The BGMEA President requested the Governor of Bangladesh Bank to take prompt and effective steps to deal with this emergency.

The Governor listened to the concerns of the BGMEA delegation seriously and assured a speedy resolution to this issue. He said that initiatives will be taken to temporarily pay the dues of the banks to the customers, so that the urgent financial needs of the exporters can be met.
