The Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) has expressed deep concern, strong condemnation, and protest over an incident in which an Assistant Engineer of Northern Electricity Supply PLC (NESCO), Md. Rokonuzzaman, was assaulted and threatened with death at his workplace, a press release said.

In a statement yesterday, IEB said that on August 25, while discharging his duties at Sales and Distribution Division-3 in Rangpur, Engineer Rokonuzzaman was harassed and faced death threats from a group of individuals. The incident has sparked outrage among engineers across the country, the statement noted.

IEB further emphasized that engineers play an indispensable role in the nation’s infrastructure, industry, and technological advancement. Yet, they are repeatedly subjected to threats, harassment, and conspiracies in their workplaces. Such incidents, the organization said, not only endanger engineers but also severely hinder national development.

The statement warned that if the safety and dignity of engineers are not ensured, they may lose their morale and many talented professionals could be driven abroad—posing a grave threat to the country’s development.

IEB demanded immediate identification and exemplary punishment of those involved in the incident. It also urged the government to take effective and strict measures to guarantee the safety of engineers at their workplaces.

The institution reaffirmed that it would remain vocal in protecting the dignity, rights, and security of engineers, and pledged to continue its role in this regard in the future.
