Thieves broke into the village home of Sharif Osman Hadi, convener of the Inqilab Mancha, who was shot in Dhaka, on Friday night in Nalchitty upazila of Jhalakathi.

The burglary took place at Hadi’s residence in the Khasmahal area while no family members were present, said Ariful Alam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Nalchitty Police Station.

According to a neighbour, Golam Kibria, he noticed two suspicious individuals behind the house early in the morning when he went out for prayers. “When I asked them to stop, they fled,” he said.

Another neighbour, Jannati Akhter, who looks after the house, said she later found cash wrapped in a towel lying abandoned in front of the house. She informed Hadi’s elder sister, Fatema Begum, who came to the house and discovered that a cupboard inside had been forced open. The cash kept there was missing, she said.

Hadi’s cousin, Sirajul Islam, said the break-in occurred while the house was empty, and the family was yet to determine the total value of the stolen items.

OC Ariful Alam said police visited the scene soon after receiving the information. “Preliminary investigation is underway. We are speaking with family members, and legal proceedings have been initiated,” he added.

Sharif Osman Hadi was shot by unidentified assailants on a motorcycle in the Box Culvert area of Bijoynagar in the capital at around 2:25 pm on Friday, a day after the schedule for the 13th parliamentary election was announced. He was initially taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition and later shifted to Evercare Hospital for advanced treatment.
