After every election, with the formation of a new government, new hopes awaken in people’s hearts. Following a long struggle for democracy, the expectations from the newly elected government in 2026 are naturally higher.
The primary expectation of the people from the new government is the establishment of justice. The culture of impunity is deeply embedded in every corner of the country. The people of Bangladesh are looking at the new government with sky-high hopes. Those helpless victims who have been denied justice for so long hope to finally receive it. The government must provide justice for the assassination of Osman Hadi, the rape and murder of Tanu, uncover the mysteries of the Pilkhana tragedy, and ensure justice for all mothers and sisters who have been victims of sexual violence. In the new Bangladesh, the justice system must operate both quickly and impartially.
Political stability is also a pressing need of the time. Prolonged political tension, distrust, conflicts, and clashes have affected every layer of the country, from the economy to social life. The beauty of democracy lies in accepting differences of opinion and practicing coexistence. Therefore, citizens expect the new government to foster a tolerant political environment where differences of opinion exist but do not turn into revenge or instability. People now hope for a political climate in which opposition does not mean enmity but is instead a healthy competition based on reasoning and debate.
Economic stability and improving living standards are now at the center of people’s expectations. Global economic uncertainty, inflation, and job insecurity have created immense pressure on ordinary citizens. People expect the new government to implement policies that ensure transparency in the market, take effective steps to control prices, and create new employment opportunities for the younger generation. The public wants an economy where opportunities are equal and every person has the chance to realize their potential.
Significant work is also needed to improve the quality of education. While the number of universities is increasing, the quality of education is not improving at the same pace. Education should focus not only on certification but also on skill development and creativity. Ensuring quality education in a country with a large youth population is the foundation for future development. To prevent brain drain the government must ensure that young people can achieve their dreams within their own country.
Ensuring the safety and dignity of women is one of the biggest challenges for the new government. Acts of violence against women have increased dramatically in recent times. In the new Bangladesh, women’s security and empowerment must not only exist on paper or in policy and law but must also be reflected in reality. Additionally, the rising rate of road accidents calls for proper road management.
The protection of human rights and freedom of expression is also a significant expectation of the public. The new government must not deviate from the spirit of the July uprising. Different opinions should not be treated as enemies; rather, criticism should be taken seriously to minimize errors in governance. Parliament should be a lively space for debate, where reasoning and review play a key role in policymaking and lawmaking.
To ensure that the benefits of development reach grassroots levels, empowering local government is essential. The public expects development plans to be based on local needs, increasing public participation and ensuring transparency in project implementation.
In today’s turbulent world, foreign policy is another crucial area. People expect Bangladesh to maintain friendly relations with all countries without entering hostile engagements, working towards the nation’s development.
Furthermore, keeping pace with the times, people expect Bangladesh to advance in digitalization, implement environmental awareness programs to counter the adverse effects of climate change, and maintain ecological balance. Today, environmental protection is no longer a luxury but a question of survival.
People’s expectations from the new government are multifaceted, but at the core lies a fundamental demand—good governance. Transparency and accountability must be ensured at every level of the state. Citizens expect a neutral administration, fair law enforcement, and strict action against corruption. Only then will the rule of law be guaranteed, and only then can we establish our dream of a corruption-free new Bangladesh.
The expectations of the people are not trivial; rather, they are a rightful demand from the state. Fulfilling this demand is the foundation for a stable, prosperous, and democratic Bangladesh. The greatest challenge for the new government is to transform the promises of the election manifesto into real policies and to show visible progress in their implementation. The smaller the gap between promise and reality, the stronger the public’s trust will be. Now, it remains to be seen how effectively the new leadership can turn this dream into reality.
