Legal Aid Expansion Key to Ensuring Citizens’ Rights : Abul Barkat Akash

Prominent national civil rights and election analyst S.M. Abul Barkat Akash said that the effective establishment of legal aid services across all levels of society will play a crucial role in ensuring citizens’ rights and strengthening justice in Bangladesh.

He made these remarks on Friday evening while speaking as a special discussant at an awareness and motivational meeting on government legal aid services. The event was held at Haji Kalamia Government Primary School premises in the C&B Tekbazar area under Chandgaon Police Station in Chattogram. The program was jointly organized by the Chattogram District Legal Aid Office and the well-known social organization Footonto Kishor Sangha. The session aimed to raise public awareness about the functions and services of government-provided legal aid.

In his speech, Akash emphasized that the growing dedication of legal aid services for people from all walks of life will soon increase public awareness regarding the protection of citizens’ rights. He noted that this would not only help reduce injustice and crime but also create a sense of legal accountability across society. As a result, both civil and human rights would be upheld with dignity.

The event was presided over by Md. Saddam Hossain, Central President of Footonto Kishor Sangha, and moderated by Advocate Md. Kamrul Hasan Fahim, the organization’s Senior Joint General Secretary. Joint District Judge of the Chattogram Land Survey Tribunal, Rupen Kumar Das, attended the program as the chief guest. The keynote speaker was Subrata Das, Chief Legal Aid Officer and Senior Civil Judge of Chattogram. Golam Mawla Murad, General Secretary of Chattogram Press Club, was present as the inaugurator.

Several distinguished guests also attended the event, including social worker and politician Ilias Chowdhury, along with Md. Mosharraf Hossain, Mohammad Ibrahim Mia, Jinnah Shukkur, Md. Solaiman, Tapan Chakraborty, Lokman Hakim, Md. Ershad, Mohammad Mizan, Md. Asman, and Sohel Tanvir. Leaders and members of Footonto Kishor Sangha, including Senior Vice President Md. Mohiuddin, Treasurer Anas, Organizing Secretary Ishtiaq Imon, Assistant Office Secretary Asif, Publicity Secretary Md. Sohel, Assistant Publicity Secretary Md. Russell, Cultural Secretary Choton Mahajan, and Executive Members Javed, Farhad, Shamim, Anas Ibne Ali, Linkon, Azad Hossain, Robiul, Iftekhar Munna, Rimon, Sohan, Siam, Shihab, Ilham, and Tasmi, were also present.

The meeting concluded with a call to expand legal aid services further and ensure accessibility for all citizens, particularly the underprivileged, to establish justice and uphold fundamental rights across the country.
