An earthquake stuck various parts of the country, including the capital Dhaka. The earthquake occurred at 10:37 am on Friday while the epicenter of the 5.7 earthquake was Madhabadi upazila under Narsingdi district, near Dhaka. Since the earthquake originated near Dhaka, its impact was felt a little more in the capital.
The earthquake damaged buildings in various parts of the country, including Dhaka. Although its magnitude was initially announced as 5.7, experts said that the magnitude of the earthquake will be more than 6 in the study. However, the country’s Meteorological Department initially said that it was a medium-class earthquake. They said that the duration of the earthquake was about 28 seconds. Meanwhile, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said that the intensity of the earthquake was 5.5 on the Richter scale.
An eight-storey building collapsed in the Koshaituli area of Armanitola. Two units from Sadarghat and Siddiqbazar fire stations reached the spot and brought the situation under control. Eyewitnesses said that some loose parts of the plaster and some bricks of the building had fallen. In addition, three pedestrians died when the railing of another building collapsed in the same area.
Another person was injured when bricks fell from an under-construction building in Khilgaon on a neighboring two-storied building. Fire service personnel have confirmed the news of a fire at a house in Block-F Road-5 in Baridhara. Two units from Baridhara Fire Station were engaged in extinguishing the fire. However, it could not be confirmed whether the fire was due to an earthquake. An eight-storey building tilted in the Swamibag area of Sutrapur in the capital. It is stuck in another building nearby. The Sutrapur Fire Service unit went to the spot and brought the situation under control. Meanwhile, there was a lot of talk about the news that a building of the Chief Advisor’s office was damaged in the earthquake, but no casualties were reported there. A seven-storied building has been reported to have collapsed on Abedkhali Road in Kalabagan.
A unit from Mohammadpur Fire Station has reached the spot and is investigating, but there have been no reports of any casualties. Local residents said the building is fine, but people called in panic. A house caught fire in Gazaria, Munshiganj. Two units from Gazaria Fire Station reached the spot.
After the earthquake, people from different parts of the capital came out on the roads in panic. Like the capital Dhaka, our district and upazila representatives have sent reports that the earthquake was felt in Chandpur, Nilphamari, Sirajganj, Narayanganj, Patuakhali, Bogura, Barishal, Moulvibazar and the metropolitan cities of Chittagong and its surrounding upazilas.
Among them, it is known from Narayanganj that the earthquake started at 10:36 am and lasted for a few seconds. At this time, people started running in panic.
At least eight people were killed and scores of others, including children and the elderly, were injured. Of these, three were killed when the railing of the Bangshal building in the capital collapsed. A child died when a wall collapsed in Rupganj, Narayanganj and four people were killed in Narisingdi. Dr. Abu Hossain Mohammad Mainul Ahsan, Director of the Hospital and Clinic Branch of the Health Department, said that more than 200 people were injured and received treatment in different parts of the country in the terrible earthquake. The condition of many of the injured undergoing treatment is critical. He said that emergency medical teams are working in all hospitals in the country to treat the casualties.
According to the latest information, a child named Fatema (1) died after a wall collapsed in Rupganj, Narayanganj. In Narsingdi, an elderly man named Kazam Ali (73) and a child named Omar (10) of Sindurpur Union were killed when their house wall collapsed. On the other hand, 38 people were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital after being injured from different parts of the capital Dhaka.
