Motaleb Sikder, convener of the Khulna divisional committee of Sramik Shakti—the workers’ wing of the National Citizens Party (NCP)—was shot in the Sonadanga area of Khulna on Monday afternoon. He was taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital in critical condition.

The shooting occurred around 12:15 pm, police said. Sonadanga Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rafiqul Islam confirmed the incident. The information was also shared on social media by NCP Joint Chief Organiser Dr Mahmuda Mitu. Motaleb Sikder is the son of the late Moslem Sikder of the Sheikhpara Palli Mangal School area in Sonadanga.

NCP Khulna district and metropolitan organiser Sajidul Islam Bappi said locals rescued Sikder after the shooting and rushed him to Khulna Medical College Hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment. “His condition remains critical,” he said.

Reacting to the incident, Bappi alleged that Khulna has turned into a “safe haven for criminals,” citing a recent rise in shootings and the recovery of bodies from rivers. He claimed administrative inaction has put people’s lives at risk and described the city as being plagued by teenage gangs and armed groups. He further alleged that those involved in violent activities often secure release and return to crime, accusing ruling-party-linked elements of backing such groups. He said July movement activists are now demanding the right to live in safety.

OC Rafiqul Islam said Sikder was shot near Sonadanga Surgical Clinic. “He was rescued and taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital. An investigation is underway, and further details will be shared later,” he added.
