BRAC University has recently emerged as the highest ranked university in Bangladesh in the 2025 ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS), a press release said.
The GRAS evaluates world universities across 57 subjects in the fields of natural, life, medical and social sciences alongside engineering.
BRAC University secured a place in the 301–400 band in public health with a total score of 95.9.
The points were gained for the world-class education and scholarships, high-impact research, and strong global collaborations of the university’s flagship public health institution, BRAC James P Grant School of Public Health (BRAC JPGSPH).
The University of Dhaka is the only other institution from Bangladesh in the ranking announced in the middle of December last year, coming up in the 401–500 band.
Another aspect of the GRAS is that it is based on nine objective indicators grouped into five categories—world-class faculty, world-class research output, high-quality research, research impact, and international collaboration.
In the research impact category, which focuses on the citation rate of research, BRAC University has secured a place among the top scorers worldwide.
The school’s research spans health systems, sexual and reproductive health and rights, climate and health, gender and equity, and policy-relevant public health research across Bangladesh and other low and middle-income countries.
For over two decades, BRAC JPGSPH has been recognized for its experiential learning model and field-based research approach, translating local public health challenges into globally relevant evidence and policy insights.
Professor Malay Kanti Mridha, deputy dean of the BRAC JPGSPH, said, “While we celebrate being recognized as the premier school of public health in Bangladesh and among the top 400 in the world, this achievement belongs to our faculty, students, and partners who worked tirelessly to transform public health education.”
“This global ranking reinforces our commitment to our mission to create public health leaders and evidence-based solutions,” he added.
Professor Mushtaque Chowdhury, founding dean of BRAC JPGSPH, said, “This milestone highlights our pioneering approach to experiential learning and globally relevant public health research.”
