Like every year, this year too, on May 10, Sunday, “World Mother’s Day” was celebrated in Bangladesh like the rest of the world. In continuation of this, the special World Mother’s Day honor ceremony “Garbini Mother-2026” was organized by the capital’s Universal Medical College Hospital for the thirteenth time. At the beginning of the ceremony, a minute of silence was observed in memory of the mother of the chief guest, Begum Jebunnesa, and Garbini Mother Falguni Kundu. The event held at the Rawa Convention Center in Mohakhali, the capital, was attended by the Minister of Social Welfare and the Minister of Women and Children Affairs, Professor Dr. AZM Zahid Hossain, MP. The chief guest said, “Just as a child’s first teacher is his mother, so is his last hope in the most difficult times of his life. The constant sacrifice of a mother does not expect any reward. Our duty is only to keep her with respect and affection throughout her life.’ The chief guest thanked the Universal Medical College Hospital authorities for providing advanced medical services as well as organizing such a social event and called for maintaining this continuity, a press release said.
The program was presided over by Universal Medical College Hospital Chairman and BCI Senior Vice President Preeti Chakraborty, and the hospital’s Managing Director and the main organizer of the Garbini-Maa Sammanna, Dr. Ashish Kumar Chakraborty, delivered the welcome speech. Narsingdi-5 (Raipura) MP Engineer Ashraf Uddin Bakul was present as a special guest at the program.
Before the Garbini Mothers were honored at the program, each child expressed their feelings. Hospital Chairman Preeti Chakraborty and Managing Director Dr. Ashish Kumar Chakraborty have been organizing this program since 2014 to pray for the recovery of their mother due to her illness. Initially, 5 pregnant mothers were awarded this honor, where the late nationally renowned educationist and national professor Dr. Anisuzzaman was present as the chief guest. Last year, the 1st anniversary of this honor was celebrated, this year the 13th edition of the Pregnant Mothers’ Honor was celebrated. At the beginning of the program, the pregnant mothers were given the Uttariya and medals by students and intern doctors of different years of Universal Medical College and Universal Nursing College.
This time, 11 well-established citizens of the society have been awarded this honor for their contribution to various fields. They are – Begum Farhat Islam, mother of Secretary of the Ministry of Railways, Md. Fahimul Islam, in the administration category; Begum Rokeya Rashid, mother of Judge (Senior District and Sessions Judge) of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal, Barisal, Md. Rakibul Islam, in the law and justice category; Mosa Razifa Azad, mother of Additional Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police – Head of the Intelligence Branch (DB) Md. Shafiqul Islam (DIG); Selima Haque, mother of Professor of the Department of Women and Gender Studies, Dhaka University, in the education category; A.K.M. Manjurul Islam’s mother Razia Ahmed, in the medical category, Professor Dr. Indrajit Prasad, Head of the Department of Endocrinology at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital, Saraswati Prasad, in the engineering category, Falguni Kundu, teacher of NorthSouth University – architect and design professional Amiti Kundu, in the music category, Saima Monir Minu, mother of Channel i-Serakanth 2009 champion and National Film Award winner renowned musician Somnur Monir Konal, in the acting (female) category, Syeda Sharmin, mother of renowned actress, musician and model and film star Tasnia Farin, in the acting (male) category, Fatema Akhter Kajal, mother of renowned theater actor, model and director and social worker (Dakbox Foundation) Ziaul Haque Palash, and Admy, a lecturer at East West University and a scholarship recipient from the Prothom Alo Trust Admy Meritorious Fund. Shirin Akhter (Pia), mother of the talented Khairum Islam.
No posthumous medals are awarded in the Garbini Mother Award.
At the Garbini Mother-2026 Award Ceremony – all mothers were awarded with an honorary crest, medal, free master health check-up package, wooden picture and gift items. It is worth noting that Garbini Mother Award is a social initiative of the capital’s Universal Medical College Hospital. The entire program was hosted by news anchor Bipasha Majumder and the main coordinator of Garbini Mother Award – 2026 was the hospital’s Head of Brand C. F. Zaman.
