Graduate Colloquium Series: Summer 2025 by the school of humanities and social sciences held at NSU

Dhaka : North South University’s (NSU) School of humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS) hosts the ‘NSU SHSS Graduate Colloquium Series: Summer 2025’ on 8 July 2025. This colloquium attracted a diverse audience ranging from distinguished faculty members, students, academics, and researchers. The student presenters were Taslima Tariq from the Department of History and Philosophy, Kirti Mohan Paul from the Department of Law, Md. Fazlul Karim from South Asian Institute of Policy  Governance (SIPG), and Kishore Dhar from the Department of English & Modern Languages, according to a press release.

Dr. Selim Reza, Associate Professor at the Department of Political Science and Sociology, NSU, moderated the colloquium and appreciated the academic curiosity and courage of the presenters for working on unique research projects. Dr. Md.  Rizwanul Islam, Professor of Law and Dean of SHSS at NSU, welcomed the presenters and encouraged them to keep up their intellectual efforts in conducting original research.

Ms. Taslima Tariq presented on the topic ‘Jawaharlal Nehru University’s 2016 Azadi Movement: A Critical Discourse Analysis of The Times Now, India and The Zee News’, where she analyzed the national narrative that is projected by the national news channels.

Kirti Mohan Paul presented his paper titled ‘Legal Reforms in Bangladesh’s Capital Market to Enhance Foreign Investment: A Comparative Study of Investor Protection Mechanisms in the USA’. He identified and compared with USA’s investor protection mechanism as a core legal principle. He had multiple recommendations, such as proposing an Investor Protection Act, introducing an independent capital market tribunal, whistleblower programs, etc. He finally ended his presentation, stating that this is a call for regulatory maturity. Md. Fazlul Karim spoke on his topic titled ‘Smart Pre-payment Electrical Metering System: Chaos & Challenges’. He mentioned that a smart prepayment metering system allows utilities to monitor and control, recharge automatically, and offer effective load management by reducing sanctioned load for a group of consumers. Kishore Dhar provided a comparative analytical paper on two modernist writers, Virginia Woolf and Rabindranath Tagore. Modernism refers to the breaking away from traditions and conventions, where European modernism is impacted by Post-World War I. Whereas South Asian modernism is focused on revolting against British rule. He further highlighted that in ‘The Home and the World’, the characters reflect on their lives unravelling under socio-political pressure.

During the Q& A segment, faculty members engaged with the presenters on their respective research topics and exchanged their views and reflections. The interactive exchange of ideas deeply immersed all the attendees.  Dr. Norman K. Swazo, Professor of Philosophy and Director of the Office of Research at NSU, delivered the concluding speech as the Special Guest. He highlighted the professional development opportunities for graduate school students and gave each of them detailed feedback and commended them on their presentations. Finally, a Certificate of Appreciation was handed over to the presenters.
