Dhaka : North South University (NSU) organized a commemorative event titled “Remembering the July Uprising” on July 17, 2025, at the AUDI 801, bringing together students, faculty members, and distinguished guests for a reflective session on the historic movement, according to a press release.

The program commenced with a recitation from the Holy Quran, followed by a minute of silence in honor of the martyrs and a rendition of the national anthem. A short documentary/video presentation provided context and background on the significance of the July Uprising.

Professor Abdur Rob Khan, Treasurer and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (In-Charge) of NSU, delivered the welcome address, setting the tone for the program. He said, “The July Uprising is not just a historical event, it is a powerful reminder of the people’s will to resist oppression. Through  discussion, we aim to reconnect with that spirit and inspire thoughtful engagement with our national history.” The keynote speech was presented by Dr. Salimullah Khan, Professor, Department of History and Philosophy, NSU, who offered insightful reflections on the uprising’s lasting impact on the nation political and social consciousness. He stated, “We need reforms that allow us to freely elect our representatives. And if those representatives betray our trust, we must also have the power to remove them. The martyrs of July did not sacrifice their lives for a bicameral parliament. We must honor their sacrifice by upholding the true spirit of democracy.”

The event was graced by two Honble Founding Life Members of the NSU Board of Trustees. Benajir Ahmed, attending as the Special Guest, reflected on the relevance of the July Uprising in  context. “Our younger generation must understand that the freedoms we enjoy were hard-earned,” he said. “We must keep these memories alive so that history may continue to guide our future.” Meanwhile, M. A. Kashem, the Chief Guest, delivered a heartfelt speech emphasizing the importance of honoring national struggles. “Moments like the July Uprising remind us of the courage and sacrifice that shaped our nation. As educators and citizens, we must ensure these stories are preserved, studied, and passed down with pride.” Professor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury, Vice-Chancellor of NSU, chaired the session and delivered the closing remarks. He stated, “At North South University, we are committed to nurturing informed, responsible citizens. Remembering the July Uprising is not only about honoring history, it is about learning from it and inspiring future generations to uphold the values of justice, courage, and sacrifice.” The event concluded with a special dua in remembrance of the martyrs and veterans of the July Uprising.
