SJIBL holds workshop on thalassaemia, blood donation for 25th anniversary

Shahjalal Islami Bank PLC. organized workshop on thalassaemia and voluntary blood donation program association with Bangladesh Thalassaemia Hospital at Corporate Head Office of the Bank as part of its’ 25th anniversary on 12 May 2026. The Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Bank Mohammed Younus was present as the Chief Guest and formally inaugurated the event. The Associate Professor of the Department of Hematology, Dhaka Medical College Hospital Dr. Mafruha Akhter (Rumana) presented various information and data about Thalassemia in the workshop. The Managing Director of Shahjalal Islami Bank PLC. Mosleh Uddin Ahmed, the Additional Managing Director of the Bank Md. Abdullah Al-Mamun, the Deputy Managing Directors M. M. Saiful Islam & Md. Jafar Sadeq, FCA delivered speech in the program, a press release said.

Among others The SEVP & Company Secretary of the Bank Md. Abul Bashar, the Executive Director of Bangladesh Thalassemia Hospital Dr. A. K. M. Ekramul Hossain, the Chief Medical Officer of Bangladesh Thalassemia Hospital Dr. Kabirul Islam, the head of Human Resources Division of the Bank A. K. M. Hasan Rahim and the head of various division of Corporate Head Office were present at the event. The Officers from the Corporate Head Office and different branches of the Bank voluntarily donated blood in the blood donation program.

Thalassaemia is a serious hereditary disease causing anemia. If both parents carry the gene for this disease, their child is likely to be born with thalassaemia. Currently, about 10-15 thousand children are born with this disease every year.

Through the Hb. Electrophoresis (OHE) test from the Bangladesh Thalassaemia Hospital, one can find out whether he is a carrier of this disease. Only awareness can prevent the birth of a child with thalassaemia by stopping the marriage of a carrier with another carrier.
